Nutshell Filters are media-based filters. Nutshell filters are proven to remove greater than 98% removal of 5-micron oil droplet and solids. They were developed more than forty years ago with the objective of providing better filtration performance than conventional sand and mixed media filtration systems.
At the heart of the Nutshell Filters is a hydrophilic multi-grade nutshell filter, capable of capturing and retaining large amounts of oil. The nutshell media provides a large adsorption area allowing easy adhesion of oil to the nutshell’s surface. The media also exhibits good solids retaining capacity and the presence of oil acts to increase the solids removal efficiency. The multi-grade media offers excellent oil coalescing and holding capacities, giving long run times and reduced volumes of backwash water.
The Nutshell Filter uses backwash fluidization pump to re-circulate the filter bed contents, stripping the oil and solids from the nutshell media. Backwash volumes are much reduced as the fluidization does not require an external source of backwash water and water is only introduced at the end of the cycle to displace the contaminated fluid from the vessel.
Another major advantage is that inlet water (rather than filtered water) can be used as the backwash water source in most applications. Backwashing does not require gas sparge or surfactants for efficient cleaning. The vessel internal distributors and collectors are custom designed for the duty to give high reliability and longevity
